The Huffington Post on Boudoir

Today the Huffington Post featured an article about boudoir photography and naturally I was intrigued!

Marisa Leigh, photographer and author does a brief overview of the history and evolution of boudoir and then makes a great case about why it is still relevant in today’s world.

This is my favorite excerpt: “The whole purpose of boudoir art and photography is that women should love their bodies, and that feeling sexy shouldn’t just be about pleasing somebody else — it should be about pleasing yourself, and realizing just how valuable you are. For these reasons, I would argue that boudoir photography is not only relevant in modern society, but it’s absolutely essential!”

Check out the article now and share! I love that more and more people are talking openly about how positive the boudoir experience can be! Every week I get the privilege of meeting, coaching and photographing women who come from all walks of life. In the end we all want the same thing – to feel feminine, powerful and SEXY!

2014 Lets Do This

Hello my loves,

I hope the 2nd day of 2014 is treating you well so far! This post will be short and sweet, I want to share something that has been on my heart lately. As 2013 came to an end I decided not to make a list of resolutions for 2014, but rather determine a purpose and focus.

My word(s) for 2014 will be: ACTION and/or PRESENT! (read more about why below)

I have to admit I was inspired by Lara Casey’s Power Sheets to do things a little differently. It’s a 6 month planner/guide/inspiration to find a focus and make a plan to accomplish whatever your mission is. Holy cow you guys – it’s so stinkin’ motivating! I sat for hours the first night filling out all of the prep pages! Answering questions about what when wrong in 2013 and what went right. I STRONGLY recommend everyone go out check them out!

I’m still working on creating goals and plans for 2014, but so far one thing is VERY apparent to me. In 2013 PROCRASTINATION killed me! Please tell me I’m not the only one that struggles with this? Procrastination brings nothing positive in my life. It makes me late, stressed, unorganized, guilty…etc. All things that I want to avoid in 2014. The opposite of this is ACTION and that’s why I want that to be my word for 2014!

If I could pick two words, the other would be PRESENT. 2013 is kind of a blur. Do you feel the same way? There are 365 days in a year, you would think I could remember more. Here are a few highlights that come to mind…

Seeing my relationship with Ryan grown even stronger through 2 scary hospital visits

In 2014 I want to be PRESENT everywhere I go. I want to enjoy the time I have with friends and family and not be pre-occupied with what I have next on my to-do list. In 2014 Ryan and I will get married, everyone tells me “it’s a blur, try and enjoy it” Man oh man I hope I can figure out a way to avoid that! After a year of planning and stressing I want to remember every moment! I pray that I can be present in every little moment.

CONFESSION: One thing I realize as I write this post is that even in the fun moments, I was 25% stressed and 75% having fun. As I look at the photo of us on the sailboat for the engagement session I remember how we had to cancel 3 times because of bad weather! I was so sad everytime, but it was worth the wait. During our first trip to New Orleans to plan the wedding I scheduled wayyy to many venue meetings and had a bit of a meltdown at the end of the day. Luckily, I can look back now and laugh.

~

“The heart of man plans his way,

but the Lord establishes his steps.” – Prov 16:9

 ~

I also realize that in the moments that were supposed to be scary and sad I was able to find strength and peace through God. I would never wish bad health on anyone but those times in the hospital really brought Ryan and I closer together. Needless to say we have already put to practice the vow “through sickness & health.”

Now it’s your turn! First, think about some pros/cons from 2013 and see if there is a pattern. Next, think of your word for 2014 and write it below in the comments! This word will be your theme, mission, focus for the next 365 days! I can’t wait to see what your word is!

Cheers to taking ACTION and being PRESENT in 2014!!! :)

xoxo,

Sontera

Winter Wonderland – Styled Session

These are a few of my favorite things….

Yes that song is playing over and over again in my head while I worked on an inspiration board for an upcoming styled session that I am so freakin excited about! I’m a native Houstonian and I hate cold weather. The only thing that gets me excited about winter is the change in decor and fashion – so much so that I am dying to plan a styled shoot with all of my favorite winter things! (Think Oprah’s Favorite Things, but without the free car.)

The exact date is TBD, but I’m thinking the first weekend in January would be perfect. Why? Because Valentines Day is one of the busiest times of the year for a boudoir photographer. What’s more romantic than gifting your mate an exquisite photo album full of sexy photos of yourself?! If you are looking to do this in time for Valentines Day then your shoot needs to happen in December or early January.

Here’s what I have in mind…
Focal point: Fireplace mantel, candles overflowing onto the floor.
Color palette: Merlot, cream, gold.
Props: Hot chocolate, sheepskin rug, red wine, deep red floral arrangements.
Fashion: Sheer over-sized sweater, boy shorts, knitted thigh-high stockings.

Winter Wonderland

This will be a FULL session like you would normally get with me and my make-up / hair stylists but with the added benefit of a uniquely planned set with props and the location fee included! While the set will be winter inspired, I definitely plan to make it versatile enough so that your photos never look dated and will be something you can look back on and enjoy all year round.

Details are still coming together, if you are at all interested in this styled shoot, please contact me and I will update you as plans finalize! Email me at sontera@lighthouseboudoir.com or call 281-221-2878

Cheers,

Sontera

Ps. What are some of your favorite winter things?! Comment below…

WTW: Soft & Sexy

Pumpkin Spice Lattes, scarves and knee high boots are making their appearance these days, which means Fall is here! I would say winter, but we all know Houston winter doesn’t really start until mid January, and it lasts for about a month. haha

The days are shorter, which means I wake up when it’s dark and then by the time I get home and settled it’s starting to get dark again. I don’t know about you but the first thing I want to do when I get home these days is throw on some yoga pants, take my bra off (let’s get real for a second) and dig out a comfy over-sized sweater from the back of my closet. Afterall – my DVR is loaded with Revenge, Scandal and Modern Family episodes that I NEED to catch up on. (Yes, those are my guilty pleasures, don’t judge, you know you “accidentally” leave on Real Housewives when you are cleaning the house too.)

Speaking of warm and comfy clothes, this week on my What to Wear (WTW) series it’s all about that comfy over-sized sweater! Check out the following three options and let me know which one you think fits your style!

Soft&Sexy

As you can see it is absolutely possible to make a sweater sexy, just pair it with some cotton panties, fun socks and you are good to go! Grab a knit sweater that is a tad sheer to add even more sex appeal.

Veering away from the traditional lingerie look can still be uber sexy but a fun way to mix things up. So as the season is changing and the air is getting a little more cooler keep these looks in mind.

WTW: Blushing Bride

Attention all of my Blushing Brides! This week on my What to Wear (WTW) series it’s all about you! Whether you are shopping for your honeymoon or boudoir photo shoot I know you are going to LOVE these three fabulous options. Each of these will fit a variety of styles, budgets and body types!

Traditionally on the wedding day a Bride and Groom will exchange a gift, something that’s personal and will last a lifetime. A popular gift idea right now is to surprise the groom with an album full of sexy photos of yourself. I’ve even had a Bride, Erica, order a large canvas as a gift, she gave it to him in the limo as they drove away from the wedding. She said that they now have it displayed in their master bedroom – love that! Read Erica’s review here.

Ok, back to the fashion. Are you ready to embrace your Daring side? The first option is full of sex appeal, but still leaves a little to the imagination. You can never go wrong with lace!   My personal favorite is the Classic look. I love the strapless bra, you could even wear this under your wedding gown! The garter is perfect to create a beautiful hourglass shape as it accentuates the waist.

Looking for something a little modest but not full blown mumu? (no flannel PJs ladies!) A great way to achieve a more Modest look is to incorporates a corset or bodysuit. Corsets will hide anything you are self conscious about but most importantly it keeps the “girls” nice and perky! I also love the feminine skirt and garter combo.

When I have a bridal boudoir photo shoot I always include the veil. There is something truly magical about a veil! There is a reason those girls on Say Yes to the Dress cry every time the veil goes on. (Yes – even I was guilty of this the first time I was shopping for my wedding dress! haha)
